We Are Geologists!!

We have begun an earth science unit. We will be studying rock, one of the most important earth materials. Our investigations will center on the properties and uses of rock in many of its particle sizes – pebbles, gravel, sand, silt and clay. The children will be working extensively with materials, observing, comparing and communicating what they learn through their firsthand experiences with the various earth materials.

Your child may ask for help finding a rock or two to contribute to our class rock collection. A rock from your yard, a park or neighborhood is fine. As our study continues, your child will be learning more and more about rocks. Try to find opportunities to talk with your child about sand, gravel and soil and the ways people use these materials in construction (asphalt, concrete, bricks, mortar etc.).

We’re looking forward to lots of discoveries and new experiences as we explore the earth materials that can be found all around us. The pictures below show the children observing and rubbing three different rocks.

Different Tastes

Today in Reading Workshop we talked about different tastes.

I like olives but most of the boys and girls in 1AH don’t like them. The boys and girls in 1AH like pizza, but I don’t. We all like ice cream, though!

We talked about how people have different tastes in food AND different tastes in books.

We looked through a lot of books and all tried to find some books that interest us. We learned that many of us are interested in the same kinds of books.

I asked the kids in 1AH to tell me some of the things they like about the books they read:

Sean: I like books that have fiction stories in them.

Maddie: I like books about horses and books by Kevin Henkes.

Towa: I like Curious George story books and true books about sharks.

Jonathan: I like true books and story books.

Paulina: I like books about animals. I like fiction and non fiction books about animals.

Ben: I like true books about things like animals and the Olympics. I like story books too.

Jasmine: I like funny books and Lilly books by Kevin Henkes.

Hyo Jung: I like Arthur books and princess books and mermaid books and Julius the Baby of the World. I like fish books and dolphin books too.

Eric: I like books about true books about sharks and I like Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Oliver: I like books about Star Wars and the Wimpy kid books.

Library Volunteers Needed

Volunteers Needed in the Library

We are looking for a few (10-20) willing parents to volunteer in the ES Pudong Library.

Why be a volunteer?

Good example for your children to volunteer
An opportunity to share your child’s school experience
Helps children to read better…when they find the book they want!
Great way to get to know SAS Pudong and meet new people
Can check out books/DVDs/Playaways for your family

Qualifications:

Love children
Know your ABC’s—You don’t have to be able to speak English well to shelve.
Can commit to a regular schedule

What will you be doing in the library?

Helping children find books
Shelving books so that children can find them again
Doing book displays
Decorating/labeling book shelves
Reading aloud books to children on Fridays from 11:40-12:40
Helping to order new books
Helping with the visiting authors

Our Favorite Books

The students in 1AH have brought in their favorite books from home. We used Comic Life to make a poster saying why we chose these books as our favorites.

Here is an example. The rest are on the wall outside our classroom. You can check them out when you come for Open House. See you soon!

Alphabet Match

This week in centers we will be playing Alphabet Match on the computer. You need to match the letter with the animal who has the same beginning sound. You can play it during Centers time and at home with your mom or dad! Just click on the picture below to play the game!

Grade One Sings

We have been learning some new songs and poems in grade one. Here is a short video of all of the first graders singing a song about SAS called This Great School. Aren’t we incredibly talented?

First Day Fun!

We had a lot of fun meeting our new classmates yesterday!

We had an assembly, we toured the whole elementary school, we investigated a lot of the gear in our own classroom, we went to music, we played outside and learned about an author named Kevin Henkes.

I know we are going to have another great day today!
