Today is Excercise Your Mind, READ day.  So we came in our sporty clothes.

Tomorrow is St Patricks Day.  Remember to wear GREEN!

A consonant digraph is made up from two consonants which join together to produce a single sound. The most common consonant digraphs are ch-, sh-, th-, ph- and wh-. Earlier in the year we investigated consonant blends.  That is when two or more vowels are blended together but still retain their own sounds.  Digraphs make a brand new sound.

We have learned about Saudi Arabia, which is a hot, dry climate.

We have learned about Samoa, which is a hot, tropical climate.

We have learned about Canada, which is a very cold climate in the winter.

We looked at how people in these climates dress differently, have different styles of housing and eat   different kinds of food.

Please ask your first grader to tell you all about these three countries, and the clothing, shelter and food there.

Why not leave a comment sharing some of their ideas.  If you are not sure how to leave a comment, ask your first grader.  They know how!!

We have been practicing writing comments on our blog.  All the kids in 1AH have written comments on this blog – if you are interested look at the Oobleck comments, that’s where most of them are.

Today we wrote a comment on our reading buddy’s blog.

We are getting pretty tech-y here in first grade!

She wrote a poem with us and then listened to our poems.

She said they were incredible and she was right!  We can’t wait to share them with moms and dads this Friday!!

Last week we made a Welcome to our class sign on the door for her to see.

The first graders welcomed her by reading one of her poems on the stage at the assembly.

Next, we went to a special assembly where she read us some of her poems and talked about what it is like being a poet and where she gets her ideas for poems.

She is coming to our classroom on Wednesday!!!  We can’t wait.

Today we read Dr Seuss’s book Bartholomew and the Oobleck.  Here is a retell by one of our students, Alex.

This book is about a king.  He didn’t like rain, sunshine, fog and snow because they come every day.  He called his magicians to make something new come down from the sky.  They made Oobleck.  Oobleck is sticky and it glued almost everybody to the ground or to each other or something.  Then the king got glued to his own chair.  When he said sorry all the Oobleck melted.  He liked the rain, sunshine, fog and snow again.

This afternoon we made Oobleck.  Here are some photos.  Enjoy!
