The Great Turkey Walk by Kathleen Karr. It is a great historical fiction about a boy that may not be book smart, but is heart smart. Top Ten Reasons to read my favorite book:
10. Turkeys are funny birds and make weird noises in their throat and at some point eat a swarm of locusts.
9. Simon is a unique student, being in 3rd grade for four years and now is being “graduated” out of school. pg. 5
8. Simon likes to use the word cogitate even though he did not pass 3rd grade.
7. Simon picks up stray friends along his journey!
6. Simon had his father (that he never knew), tar and feathered, scalped by Indians, and put in jail in Denver.
5. Simon doesn’t mind walking in turkey poop, feels personally responsible for every turkey in his keeping, and falls in love with an older woman…8 months!
4. Simon is generous and honest and rewards his friends who are as well….giving shoes, shirt, and a knife to Jabeth, former slave.
3. Simon is a young man willing to accept responsibility and lifes hard knocks in stride without self pity.
2. Simon is a risk taker from making friends with drunks and slaves, to trusting his instinct when it comes to judging people.
1. Simon is a lot smarter than he thinks he is…A lesson for all of us!
