First Days Graphing

This week we are doing a few review exercises on graphing. We are using class wide surveys and math to convey key ideas about who we are as a group of people. Some of the data reflects our likes and dislikes, hope, wishes and basic attitude. Here is our work in progress.

Welcome to a new year

Hello:

I have been at Shanghai American School for the past 7 years.  I have taught 5th grade and 7th Math here at SAS. Originally I’m from Canada where I taught with the Edmonton Public School Board.

I am the proud father of 2 year-old Benjamin. I am also the happy husband of Lynsey, a 1st grade teacher here at SAS. Our second child is due in December.  This summer was amazing as Ben learned to walk, took part in swimming, and has added more words to his vocabulary.

Personally I enjoy photography/travel and getting out into the world to take pictures of people, places and animals. I am also interested in a variety of sports such as hockey and rugby…but do not care for golf…too frustrating.  This year I have also decided to get back to guitar after a number of years off.

As a learner I am continually working to develop my understanding of teaching and learning. I hold two Bachelor degrees, one in psychology, the other in education. I also hold a Masters degree in educational administration.

Important INFO

Letter from the Admission Office

Dear Parents,

Each semester, we send to you a survey that asks if your child(ren) plan to return to SAS the following semester. In the past, the Office of Admission has sent this paper survey home with your youngest child. With the launch of the Parent Portal, we will “go green” and conduct the survey via PowerSchool. Please click on the survey for each child and tell us whether or not your child(ren) will return to SAS for the fall semester of the 2010-2011 school year.

You will need to complete a survey for each child and it is very important to complete the survey no later than Friday, February 12th.  As this is essential information that we use when planning for the next school year, if you do not respond to this request, we will contact you by phone or e-mail after the due date.

If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Admission at tel.: 6221.1445, ext.2525 Daniel Dong, Puxi campus or ext.3305 Eileen Shen, Pudong campus.

Best regard,
T.K. Ostrom
Director of Admission

IMPORTANT PowerSchool Update:

1.Enrollment Survey. All enrollment surveys will be done online in PowerSchool through the Parent Portal. This enrollment survey is for next school year – 2010-2011. We will not be sending the enrollment survey form through your youngest child anymore. You will receive an email from PowerSchool regarding the details.

2.Emergency Contacts – You can now update your emergency contacts in PowerSchool. Just click the Demographics Update and scroll down to see the emergency contacts and where you need to enter the information. It is important for you to provide two emergency contacts.

Measurement

What is it all about? Measurement? Where will I ever use measurement? The reality is that you use measurement every single day! If I would like to go to the store to begin my holiday shopping, and I notice the fuel gage is nearly empty, I know that a unit of measurement just helped me! Or perhaps after the holidays I would like to get in shape, and I feel like going for a run, a unit of measurement like kilometers would help he know how far I ran on day one. Now commonly there are two unit systems used, one is the US customary or imperial system, the other is the metric system. I am a little biased as i know the metric system and appreciate that it is built on base 10 units.

What are some examples of other places in your life that you can use measurement in an authentic way?

Mid Unit 3 Reflection

Reflection on your Blog:
You will be having your unit test next week, either Thursday or Friday.  Critacally review your quiz and determine which areas you need to work on before you write the test.  On your BLOG post your quiz reflection that answers the following questions:
1)  What was the easiest area of the quiz for you?
2)  Where are you making your errors?  Finding the LCM, remembering to simplify the final answer, adding fractions, subtracting fractions, multiplying fractions, dividing fractions, simplifying on the diagonal when working with multiplication questions, word problems, and/or decimal review questions?
3)  What is your study plan before the test next week?

Plebeians…listen up!

Today we have completed a full cycle of students using mathtype to work on operations with fractions. Sadly many of the plebeians in my classes can not read!!!

Remember if you are asked to be precise in your language…precise. Don’t be vague or lazy, show what you know, explain your thinking. Tell others what you know and why you are doing certain steps.

I would hate to see a patrician take it upon them self to flog you in public.

Using the Mac

Welcome back from the weekend.

Well, by now each of the classes has had an opportunity to begin working directly with the macs in mathematics. We are not writing about math so much as actually doing math. We have been learning how to use Math Type and then take that information to explain out thinking in “Pages”. Here is what we worked on today, in PDF (Fractions) for you non mac types.

Admittedly, this is slow going for us. Some students prefer the pencil and paper to this method as they find it too slow, but I have told them they will get faster and at the end of the day this is just a tool, they can always use their pencil, there is no law about you must use your mac…it just make sense to use it for something other than Halo.

As a student in this class, how do you feel about mathtype and pages?
