Final Assessment Update

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Here is the rubric I will be using to grade your final assessment:

Final Assessment Grading Rubric

Your group needs to be ready to present on the following day:

 A periods- Tuesday June 2nd

B periods- Wednesday June 3rd

Note: There will be additional time to present if needed on Thursday June 4th, but you need to be ready on the first day.

Do you need extra time at school to finish your experiment? Here are additional times you can work in the Lab:

Monday and Tuesday for HOT….sign up with another teacher and you can work with me in my room from 3:00-3:30.

or

Lunch on Tuesday or Wednesday.

See me ASAP if you have any questions about the experiment!

Simple Machines Lab Activties

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

In class you will have the opportunity to learn about three types of simple machines:

We will be focusing on Levers, pulleys, and gears in class and I challenge you to read about and explore the other types of simple machines on your own.

There are many great experiments that can be done with these simple machines and if you are having trouble coming up with your own experiemnt I suggest you check out a textbook and read pages 110-128 to give you somebackground and ideas.

In class Lab Instructions:

You are required to finish atleast 2 of the three activites in the class period provided. If you are focused you might even be able to finish all three!

Prosedure:

  1.  With your lab partners get a yellow instruction sheet and check out a laptop.
  2. Pick one of the activities to start with and then go to brainpop and watch the movie that relates(Levers, Pulleys, or Gears). Take notes
  3. Do the lab activity that is on the yellow sheet and record all observations.

Physics of China Alive Reflection

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Take some time to reflect on the activities you participated in last week on China Alive.

IMG_0882

Select one activity and make connections between what you were doing and our study of forces and motion. Also, if you can add details relating to simple machines which is the topic we will be introducing later this week. This should be a half page journal entry written in your notebook.

Physics Unit Final Assessment 09

UPDATE!!! TYPED PROPOSALS NOW DUE:

B PERIODS ON MONDAY MAY 25TH

A PERIODS ON TUESDAY MAY 26TH

Purpose: This is your final major assessment for science this year. You will be working on an original lab experiment that combines concepts related to the physics and simple machines unit with general skills that you have developed throughout the year in science.

Instructions:

Here is your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned, be creative and create your own experiment all in one activity!

  1. Design an original experiment that you can set up, test and finish in two class periods.
  2. You can bring in materials from home or use school materials.
  3. Be creative and scientific!
  4. Please read requirements carefully.
  5. Complete the grading rubric and reflection and turn it in the day you present to the class.

Balloon Rocket Challenge

Monday, May 4th, 2009

This week our focus will be on the Balloon Rocket Challenge. This exciting project allows you and a partner to design and build a balloon powered rocket and test it in class. Here are the instructions:
BRC

Good luck and don’t give up!

For Homework:

Read pages 35-38 in the astronomy textbook. Then write a reflection on how this connects to  the BRC. Also include the review of forces from the brainpop in class.

Flame Test

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

For homework finish the flame test lab report. This should all be done in your notebook.  For each test you should have the following:

  1. Name of Compound
  2. Chemical Formula
  3. Written observations from test
  4. Color sketch of the flame

Then answer these reflection questions:

  1. After you have observed the flame at each of the stations take some time to think about why there were different changes when using different chemical solutions. What caused these differences?
  2. Explain how you think this applies to our understanding of the stars and other matter in space.
  3. What are your overall thoughts on this lab? reflect on the experience of doing a flame test.
  4. What questions do you have about Chemistry that you hope to have answered in your HS Chemistry class?

P.S- Sorry this was not posted over the weekend, I hit “Save” instead of “Publish”!!!

Galaxies and the Universe

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

The final ideas that we will be discussing in our study of astronomy revolve around the concept of galaxies and the universe. To prepare for next class read pages 117-124 in the textbook and you are responsible for documenting that you understand the content presented in these two sections. You can decide to take detailed notes, draw sketches/diagrams and/or answer the section review questions. This time it is up to you, but you need some documentation of having learned the info presented. Come to class prepared to discuss and with any questions that you have.

Check out this great site with much more detial on galaxies and the universe!
