Week Two – The Sound of Learning

Posted by: ekidd | August 27, 2010 Comments Off |

At the end of week two, the frantic energy and adrenaline of “Back to School” is beginning to subside and we are beginning to slip into the regular pace of learning.  Tryouts and auditions are complete; congratulations to all who participated.  Homework, assignments and assessments have commenced – you’ll start to see your child engaged in nightly homework and study.

And finally, another sure sign that school has started is the student political campaigning for Class Councils.  Our annual participation in the democratic process begins next Thursday, September 2nd – good luck to all the candidates!

A few announcements:

Principal’s Coffee:  All parents are welcome to our first HS Principals’ Coffee of the year on Wednesday, September 1st at 10:00 AM in the PAC.  Join Mr. Kidd, Mr. Knobloch, Dr. Jacobson and the Jazz band in the Performing Arts Center at 10:00 AM.  Topics include:  grade 8 – grade 9 transition, new teachers, IB and AP results, counseling update.  I look forward to seeing you on Sept. 1st.

HS Open HouseWelcome Back Night is scheduled for Thursday, September 9th starting at 6:00 PM in the PAC.  We’ll have a brief welcome from Mr. Kidd in the Perfoming Arts Center.  At 6:30 PM, parents will be “dismissed”.  Parents will receive their student’s course schedule and will trace their student’s daily tracks.  Parents will visit each classroom and teacher on their student’s schedule. This evening is not a program for individual meetings, but to give parents an understanding of each course, expectations and an opportunity to meet their teachers.  Light refreshments and sandwiches will be served for those coming directly from work!

Friday Food Delivery:  At the end of every week, students are permitted to order food for delivery to campus.  Please be aware that food delivery is prohibited from Monday to Thursday.

The Eagle Magazine: The Eagle is SAS’s twice-monthly magazine that contains great articles and pictures about various events and programs on our two campuses.  This is sent home in hard copy with the YOUNGEST child normally every other Friday.   This year’s first edition came out on Friday.  If your high schooler is your youngest child, please ask him or her for the copy.

High School Calendar:  Our calendaring system has gone digital and is available on the High School blog (see the “SAS Board and Puxi HS Events Calendar” on the top tab) or on the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Here you will find relevant high school events, activities, meetings and dates.   If you would like to add an event to this community calendar, please contact HS Principal, Ed Kidd (ed.kidd@saschina.org)

Have a great week!

A Community Day

Posted by: ekidd | August 26, 2010 Comments Off |

After weeks of painting, constructing, scheduling, meeting and preparing, the high school campus sprang to life this morning with the arrival of 689 high school students.  We kicked off the day and the school year with a joyous community gathering in the PAC, welcoming new and returning teachers, celebrating the work of our secretarial staff and introducing our new administrative team.

Following the assembly, students moved to homeroom and then on to their first academic classes of the year.  During an extended lunch, students excitedly shared stories of summer adventure and gossiped about the year ahead.  Groups of parents were hard at work in the College Corner.  To add to the community feeling, many SAS alumni were on campus to say hello and update us on their life experiences since graduation.  And finally, as if attempting to trump a day’s worth of energy and the electricity of a first day of school, a torrential thunderstorm erupted to signal the end of the day.  In the end, it was a day of community and a fulfilling start to the new school year.  Welcome back everyone!

HS 1st Season Sports Tryouts: (Baseball; Cross Country; Rugby; Tennis; Volleyball)  Tryouts for 1st Season will not officially start until Thursday, 19th August. This will allow students two days to get their schedules sorted out without jeopardizing their selection.

Prior to the first tryout, all student-athletes intending to tryout MUST get parent approval by filling out the “Permission to Participate” form. Forms available from HS Reception or online http://teachers.saschina.org/pxactivities/

Jacaranda Update

Posted by: ekidd | May 27, 2010 Comments Off |

Dear students and parents:

Your kindness and generosity over the past year and a half towards the Jacaranda School has been outstanding and I thank you for this.  In March 2008, I accidentally stumbled across the Jacaranda School while on a Habitat trip to Malawi.  At that time I didn’t know what it meant, but after hearing Marie Da Silva speak at Harvard University, in March 2009, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of.  This small school for AIDS orphans has changed my life.  My fund raising projects, with the huge help from Shanghai American School, have raised almost $70,000 to date.  This money has provided bathrooms, desks, textbooks and a nurse for the school and on June 1st the construction of Science Labs will begin.

Last week I sent a shipment of textbooks, school supplies, clothes, toy/games, sports equipment and much more to the Jacaranda School and I would like to thank you for your donations in this effort.  In 3 weeks, 24 SAS students and 4 teachers will arrive at the Jacaranda School for our 2nd visit and I can assure you this will be a very powerful experience for these students and teachers.

To see a video of the shipment, check either of the following links.

It is an honor to work at Shanghai American School and have the support of the school community for this project. The students and teachers at Jacaranda are truly grateful for your kindness. You can see our progress at the following link.

Thank you so much.
