Dear Parents,
We are sure many of you are aware of the news reports regarding the recent outbreak of the Swine Flu (H1N1) in Mexico and the United States (U.S.). We would like to offer you some clear information about this virus. While there is no indication of this strain in our area we do want to offer you reassurance that we are monitoring the news reports, gathering factual medical information from multiple professional sources, and are taking seriously any possible implications for SAS families. We are taking every precaution to protect our students and staff.
Swine Flu is a type of influenza that can be contracted from direct contact and exposure to pigs. Once a person is infected, it can be transmitted from person to person in the same way that seasonal flu spreads (through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza). There is no evidence that you can contract this flu from eating pork nor from the “smell” or “odor” of pigs in the air. Swine flu was first identified in 1930, so it has been around for some time. Most countries diagnose 1-2 cases a year. See below for a list of symptoms.
The following websites from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the U.S. and the World Health Organization offer reliable information. They are written for the non-medical person and should be able to answer all your questions.

Includes a link to a podcast from the CDC that you can watch directly on your computer.

Our nurses will continue to closely monitor the situation including following the most current information and recommendations from both the Shanghai and U.S. CDC. Please contact your school nurse if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
SAS School Nurses
