International Honor Orchestra – Only the Best Survive!

Posted by hspuxi on December 2, 2008

This year, an astounding number of SAS Puxi HS musicians have been selected into the prestigious International Honor Orchestra. It’s a pleasure to report that 14 young string players were accepted. A total of 70 - 80 players make the final selection.

The International Honor Orchestra is a select orchestra made up of students from all over the world – the USA, England, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia and Australasia. Schools send in student entries in October; these recordings are listened to by a panel of 4 examiners. Selection is dependent on technique, tone and musicianship. The orchestras are divided into Junior and Senior Honor Orchestras. The Senior Orchestra comprises students from Grade 10 to Grade 12. Grade 9s can choose to audition for either.Needless to say, the competition for an International Honor Orchestra selection is fierce and only the best survive.

Violins: Emily Weng, Jae Jung Min, Amber Chang, Anita Wu, Sean Liu, Angela Hsieh, Jocelyn Cho and Eric Huang
Viola: Bonnie Ihn
Cellos: Timothy Sun, Chloe Kim, Francis Yang, Do Hee Kang, Julianna Ko

This is SAS Puxi’s third year participating in the International Honor Orchestra – this year’s festival will be held in
Singapore. These young SAS players were already playing demanding repertoire in Middle school and the demands of this festival would be welcomed by them.

8 violinists, 1 viola player and 5 cellists will be representing SAS. We are proud of them and we know that they will play with the technical expertise and passion that’s expected of them. Congratulations to Ms. Mary Siew and her team of talented musicians.

Update on Dr. Surowski

Posted by hspuxi on November 18, 2008

Great email from Susan Zhang, Dr. Surowski’s spouse.  See below.

Hi, Alan,

On behalf of my husband David, I am reporting to you the good news of
his successful surgery.

After spending more than ten hours in the operating room, David is now
in the intensive care unit. The doctor is happy about the result, he was
able to successfully remove the tumor and test the margen of the area
to be negative. David is now clean of cancer for the time being at least.

He will have to stay in the hospital for a while before being released to go
back to Kansas for a full recovery.

He will email you with more details when he is able to do so.

Thank you very much for all the support you have given us so far.

More later,

susan zhang
