Hi Everyone,
Here is a year long experience that we are embarking on together. We are going to start working our way into an experience points based reading system. I will explain everything about it in class today. In the mean time head over to the “Reading Log” page of this blog in order to get the instructions.

Hey,
So ya the final draft is not due on monday (lucky you).
You need to go over your rough paragraph and answer ALL of the questions on pages 25,26,27.
Make sure you are writing about the environment and not the character’s feelings. The basic organization should be thesis followed by two quote burgers and conclusion… simple as that.
Remember you can read over the sample paragraph on page 24 to see how to write a good thesis statement and conclusion.
Also if you begin to freak out you can go and read the poem we looked at today (see the link below)
Nirvana by Charles Bukowski
mmmm hmmmm
Mr. Small
Ok, so for tonight you will spend 10 minutes on page 20 doing the brainstorm prompt and then you will spend the next half hour or more on page 21 filling out the different aspects of your paragraph. Remember the question you are answering is: Where is the story set? What does this excerpt tell us about the protagonist’s environment? Select quotes to support your answer.
Here is an example of a thesis sentence with a quote: (reminder: I think you guys can come up with something better than this)
The protagonist’s environment is very gloomy. London in 1606 was unwelcoming to its citizens at night: “I turn the corner- the street is dark, empty” (Carbone 2).
Good luck and don’t freak out about it. If you are, just do your best and I will totally help you tomorrow in class.

Hey everyone,
So for tonight please fill out the tables (the historical record of your daily life) on pages 12-14. Page 12 has all the directions on it. It is pretty straight forward.
See ya tomorrow!
Just a quick link to the article First Americans for you classwork/homework today
On page 8 do questions 1-4. Remember you will use the Columbus quote on pg 9 to answer question one and the link above to answer question 4.
Mr. Small
Ya ya ya,
I know I’m a little late on this one…
Please remember to bring in one artifact that you have in your home. Monday will kinda be like a grown up version of “show and tell”
See you all then
Hey All,
It is so very nice to wake up every morning and feel excited to get in to work… It has been great spending these first couple of days getting to know you all a bit. I am really looking forward to working together this year. I am certain it will be the best ever!
So, you can count this as the first post for humanities 2010-2011 school year. Let’s get this ball rollin.
Here is what YOU said in your year end reflections. This is a series of highlights from the in class essay you all wrote yesterday. If you do not see your name that means that I didn’t receive your essay for some reason (sent it now).
I really was very impressed by what you wrote. In fact I was nearly in tears while reading a few of them. It has been a really great year and I will miss all of you.
Reflections from the year:
“After going through eighth grade, I perceived that humanities is not just a course required to complete in a school year, it is also something that is strongly bonded to our life and our world. It presents to us how each part of world, time, philosophy, and history are associated with each other.”
-Josephine
“I have decided to leave the system and THROW IT ON THE GROUND! (Well, I was joking on that one.)
Everything I learned this year has made me able to rebel against the norm.”
- Meg
“Though these lessons were only for one year, and they were in an 8th grade class, I know that they will directly relate to how I get along with my life as I grow older and begin to think more broadly about life.”
-Josh
“This year in humanities I have learned not only how to write a thesis essay, I also know a part of me that I never knew.”
- Natasha
“The impact of your life can be harmful, helpful, and even influential to the whole world, so you have to evaluate your actions wisely.”
- Caroline
“I realized that I had changed so much that it would be complicated for me to change back to myself in Taiwan”
Seul
“I think that even a small thing that a person says or does when that person doesn’t even care can hurt other people or the environment.”
Celine
“Humanities class this year not only taught us vocabularies, grammar, etc, it taught us to understand who we are in the past and the present and how we live as an human being.”
-Grace
“I really enjoyed learning humanities this year and will miss all the memories I had in class, but out of all I will miss the best humanities teacher, Mr Small!”
-David (nice one David)
“every thing is no thing no thing is everything. A+ for me .”
“What am I walking to? I don’t know. I just know that, no matter how long I live, no matter how wise I am, I will never reach the destination. However, I will never stop trying.”
- Angella
“our senses are fallible, therefore we never know which of our conclusions are correct, which are not, and which are just completely insane.”
- JX
“These corrupt, businessmen have no regard for humanity and it seems like our lives are surrounded by an impenetrable wall. Everyday, our whims can be easily satisfied with a trip to the mall or somewhere even more extravagant. Our wants and needs are so confused to this point that nothing in life is meaningful anymore. To poor people living in Africa who die because of malaria which could have been prevented, their needs are truly the most basic ones that just barely sustain humans. I constantly thought about how our world will never be balanced out and money affects the way we are raised and taught. The rich and poor will need each other to survive and they symbolize the yin and yang of Earth.”
- Alice
“It made us think out of the trapped box we were in. We realized the stunning truths and lies that this world was built around.”
- Tiffany (pt 2)
“A difference made by someone may not necessarily affect the world, but it will affect someone’s world, someone’s perception, someone’s way of life.”
- Ryan
“When her book had published and spread out to the world, whole world were reminded that holocaust was the worst time period in Europe. Also, the institution in Germany had change by Anne’s journey.”
- Kevin
“In conclusion, you must follow your own journey to reach your destiny. This journey may be full of physical obstacles and mental conflicts, and each one lasts for its own time or may have an impression on your entire life. The events that occur before you reach your destiny and your destiny itself is affected by choices made by you or others. We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make us.”
- Christian
“Through enduring understandings, it has really made me think about what life really means in this devastating world. Every enduring understanding has its own meaning and reflection upon life.”
- Raymond
“Students from different cultures add a new and unique culture to their learning environment, where they can learn from each other. On the other hand, their values and beliefs may cause the difference in their relationships with one another.”
- Angela
“if we would give a helping hand, it would affect everyone around the world who needs help.”
- Monica
“I enjoyed this school year in humanities it was more than a class, it was a memory that would be kept in me reminding me of all the change I have gone through.”
- Tim
“systems can create inequities making people take risks and journeys that they don’t want to. Then, they would struggle to get used to the new environment and choose to take another journey”
- Belle
