Problem of the Week #14 & #15

I forgot to put up a problem last week…my mind was still on the beach back in New Zealand! I hope you all had a great holiday too. I am posting 2 problems this week to get you back up to speed.

The Question # 14

  • a) If you saved $2.00 on January 1, $4.00 on February 1, $6.00 on March 1, $8.00 on April 1, and so on, how much money would you save in one year?
  • b) If you saved $2.00 on January 1, $4.00 on February 1, $8.00 on March 1, $16.00 on April 1, and so on. How much money would you save in one year?

The Question #15

    Derek started his car (automatic shift) drove 9 km and spent 3 minutes waiting at traffic lights. About how much gasoline did Derek’s car use?CHART GIVEN:
AUTOMOBILE FUEL USAGE

            Starting                       .015 Liters

            Idling for 1 minute            .047 Litres

            Moving

            Manual Shift 30km              3.0 Litres

            Automatic Shift 27km           3.0 Litres

Part B
2+4=6+8=14+16=30+32=62+64=126+128=254

# 14 part a The answer is 146 because
2+4+6+8+10+12+14+16+18+20+22+24=146

# 14 part b The answer is 5630 because2+4+8+16+32+64+128+236+442+884+968+1846= 5630

I couldnt really figure out # 15 so maybe you could give me a hint.

For 14 part a
2+4+6+8+10+12+14+16+18+20+22+24=$176.00
For 14 part b
2+4+8+16+32+64+128+256+512+1024+2048+4096=
$8190.00
For 15 I don’t really get it. Can you
give me a hint?

1.41 litres waiting for traffic.
Moving:(3 litre/27km)*9=1
starting: 0.015

I think it is 2.425L
