A HUGE ‘Thank You’ to Mrs. Kathi Stewart (Lauren’s mom) for a fantastic class Christmas party which also doubled as Lauren’s birthday. She brought in the most amazing treats for the students and organized some great games during the afternoon. The whole class had a great afternoon. Thanks again for all your hard work in getting it all organized, the class can’t wait for the next party!

We had a lot of responses to our problem last week. I’m glad that we had more responses this week, anyway the correct answer to last weeks problems:

$ 767,123 multiplied by 7 days equals $ 5,369,861 on Nintendo games per week.

$ 191,781 multiplied by 7 days equals $ 1,342,467 on other games per week.

The Question

A farmer grows 252 kilograms of apples. He sells them to a grocer who divides them into 5 kilogram and 2 kilogram bags. If the grocer uses the same number of 5 kg bags as 2kg bags, then how many bags did he use in all?

The Christmas vacation is a holiday I always look forward to because it’s a good time to sit back and think about what we have achieved so far this year and also to think about the challenges, activities and fun that are to come. It is also my favorite time of year because I get to go back home to New Zealand and see family and friends and enjoy some warm weather. My idea of Christmas involves the beach, barbeques and time catching up with family and friends.

Where is your favorite Christmas destination and why is it special to you?

What does Christmas mean to you?

Thanks to everyone to commented on the last week’s brain teaser. Angela did a great job explaining how she got her answers.

“Well to find the first problem, I divided 85 by 2. We all know that’s not gonna work, but I actually DON”T want it to work. So back to the point 85 divided by 2 = 42.5. So here’s how you do it. Since .5 is right in the middle of 42 and 43, you round one of the 42.5s to 42, which you normally wouldn’t do, and the other 42.5 to 43. Add 42 and 43 and viola, you get 85!

For the second one, you have 127. You do the same thing, divide by two. After you divide by two you get 63.5, correct? So you do the same thing, round one of them up and one of them down. After you do that you get 63 and 64. These are my answers

because I double checked by adding them together and making sure they were only one number diffierent from each other.

So again the answer to #1: 42, and 43
Answer to #2:63 and 64″

Great job Angela!

The Question

On an average day, Canadians spend $958,904.00 buying video games. Of this total $767,123.00 is spent on Nintendo games. In one week how much do Canadians spend on Nintendo Games. How much do they spend on other video games in a week?

I was very impressed with Kenny’s answer “There are only a few numbers that can be turned upside-down and have rotational symmetry. They are 1, 6, 8, 9, and 0.’ Kenny identified the numbers that have rotational symmetry before finding the answer ‘6009′ by trial and error. Well done to Kenny and also to Jeffrey who was first to post the correct answer.

The Question

Mr. Mason asked the children to open their math books to the facing pages whose page numbers add up to 85. To which pages should the children turn?

Mark accidentally tore out a page of his math book. Mr. Mason asked him what page it was. Mark said that the sum of the page numbers on the facing pages was 127. What are the page numbers on the pages Mark tore out of the book?

We finished our read aloud ‘I am David’ by Anne Holm last week and watched the movie today. The students were very excited to have finished the book and couldn’t wait to watch the movie. 5JT, I hope you enjoyed the movie just as much as the book. Read the questions below and post a comment.

What were the similarities and differences between the book and the movie?

Do you think the movie portrayed the character ‘David’ that Anne Holm described in the book? Why? Why not?

What was your favorite part of the movie? Why?

What was your favorite part in the book? Why?

Which did you like the best, the book or the movie? Explain.

Also, we need another read aloud so if you have any suggestions on our next one, feel free to add the title and author to your comment.
