Another Read Aloud?

Filed Under (Curriculum, Extra-Curricular, Homework, Reading) by jtoa on 01-12-2009

We finished our read aloud ‘I am David’ by Anne Holm last week and watched the movie today. The students were very excited to have finished the book and couldn’t wait to watch the movie. 5JT, I hope you enjoyed the movie just as much as the book. Read the questions below and post a comment.

What were the similarities and differences between the book and the movie?

Do you think the movie portrayed the character ‘David’ that Anne Holm described in the book? Why? Why not?

What was your favorite part of the movie? Why?

What was your favorite part in the book? Why?

Which did you like the best, the book or the movie? Explain.

Also, we need another read aloud so if you have any suggestions on our next one, feel free to add the title and author to your comment.

Mr. T

They changed several things between the book and the movie. The movie seemed more modern, with more lifts, and even an airplane. The movie also had a lot more flashbacks. Personally, i think the movie was more scary, because there were a lot more times that he was right on the brim of getting caught.I think the only time in the book was when he was in Germany with King, the dog and the officers shot King. In the movie, there were plenty, like on the ship to Italy from Salanaca (not sure about spelling. I think the movie DID show David as David very well. I mean, sure, he tried to act normal, but even when he was as normal as could be, his mouth was turned down and his eyes were always big and wide, as if he was watching for a prank. He’s always in caution, like when Maria’s parents ask him about his family, and when he is going to Switzerland with Sophie, but that he has a right to be afraid. My favorite part of the movie had to be when Sophie pulls him out of the bookshop and takes him to a ticketing center. I liked that part beacuse you could almost see David’s heart thumping as the ticketer checked all of his passport and birth certificate and maybe some other stuff. My favorite part of the book was when David writes to Carlo and calls him stupid! It was funny, but understandable because he’s been living in the camp his whole life, so he doesn’t know what the world is like. Even if the movie was modern, I still enjoyed the book more because I felt Anne Holm explained it more clearly.

As for another book, yesterday when Ms. shappley was here, she read us abook called THERE’S A BOY IN THE GIRLS’ BATHROOM by Louis Sachar. We didn’t want her to put it down, put she did.

Hey Mr.Toa!
Personally, I think that the book is way better then the movie. It’s probably because it was more detailed but I have to admit, writing it down is a lot easier then showing it to the audience. When you write, you can write exact details and thoughts and many other things which you cannot show in a movie. There were many similarities between the book and the movie. There were many other characters in the book that the movie could have shown. For example, there could have been the lady with the baby, the dog, and some others. In the movie, some scenes were considerably shortened not saying everything they could have. As for portraying the character ‘David’ in the movie, I think they did a pretty good job. David looked like a lonely sad boy and he never used violence in anything he did. I don’t think he really said anything rude or nasty either. My favorite part of the movie was when he learned to smile. I have to admit, that part was pretty funny and I was laughing. A bread merchant had wanted to see David smile but surprisingly, David did not know how to smile so he tried to learn. My favorite part in the book was when David first ate an orange as it had been a strange moment. I also liked it because it showed that David is a little curious.
I think that a funny read aloud could be Loser by Louis Sachar.

Well MR. Toa I’d like to start out with my favorite parts . M y favorite part of the book was when King sacrafised himself for David. The reason I liked this part was because it was a very emotional part. Also that it was very good vet very sad the interesting thing to me is that the author Anne Holm could form all of these emotions into one small sense/ part of the book. My favorite part of the movies was when Davis escaped for the labor camp. I liked this part because its a very happy part. All in all i loved the book yet liked the movie. Because the movie leaves out all the stuff that really makes the story great. Some of the samalarites is that one the baker was in both the movie and the book, two the people at the gas station gave David a ride back, three the family that needed gas. , four he met his mother, some of the differences are Movie: One David traveled on a airplane. Two David’s mother was an author. three Shophie met David in Italy. Book: David got free bread fro the baker. Two Davis met the farmer. Three david lived among the rocks.
So all in all I DO think they captured Davids personality.

PS: I think a good book is tiger by Jeff stone also i think that its good book and if people enjoyed it there are Seven other book is the series……… The five ansesters

Both the book and the movie had the same characters, and the same storyline, except for the ending. The movie also skipped some parts that were in the book. For example, I really missed the part when the dog saved David’s life. The endings were a little different too. The book ended at David’s home, and the movie ended at the airport.
Yes, I do think that the movie portrayed David like it was described in the book because I was pleased with the introduction of David in the movie. I wasn’t surprised.
My favorite part of the movie was when David first escaped because it told me that kids can do the same things that adults can. It was really suspensful too! I wasn’t sure if he was going to make it!
My favorite part of the book was when David saved the girl because I could really picture it. It was a happy part of the book!
I liked the book more because I could picture the story in my head. The movie just gives it all to you, and there is no room for your imagination.
The book I suggest is There is a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom by Louis Sachar. Our substitute started reading it to us, and we all enjoyed it so far!

There are many similarities and differences between the book and the movie for example in the movie they cut out all about the mean farmer and crossing Germany. Also in the movie David didn’t go to his mom’s house, instead he took a plane. Some similarities are the man helping him escape, and meeting Maria and her family.

I think the movie portrayed the character ‘David’ that the author did.
How he act and said is almost the same in the book and in the movie, like how he don’t know how to smile.

My favorite part of the movie was meeting his mom, because it was funny how he was wearing a tuxedo walking out of the plane. This was totally different from the book.

My favorite part in the book was when David saved Maria from the fire. I liked this part because it is full of action and excitement.

I liked the book best because I could read David’s thoughts in a book. This is better because I can know more about him.

Dear Mr. Toa,

I the movie and the book both have the same story that David escapes the camp and he meets his mom. Both of the stories have the woman who paints David and takes him in for a day. The movie doesn’t have all of the events that happened in the book. For example the movie doesn’t have the part when the dog gave up his life for David’s life, and it doesn’t include the part when David meet’s a mom and a baby. In the book David went to his mom’s house, and in the movie David meets his mom at the airport.
I think that the movie portrayed “David” because it showed David’s personality and it showed how David felt.
The favorite part of the movie is when David learns how to smile because you haven’t seen him smile and his smile is HUGE.
My favorite part of the book is when David looks at the baby because it tells you to have feelings about other people.
I like the book better because it had more details and it had more events that made you think of what is going to happen next. Also the more you read of the book the more you would want to finish the book.
I love to read There’s A Boy in the Girls Bathroom, Ms. Shappley (yesterdays sub.)Read it to us yesterday.

Hey Mr. Toa!!!
I liked the book better than the movie. Well like people say the book is always better than the movies! I was a little disappointed because they excluded a lot of the important part from the book in the movie. For example David didn’t fly home to see his mom he walked and the dog saved his life. Also, didn’t the Bread man let him have some free bread for a while not just give him away at the first minute. The part I really liked in the movie was when David tries to smile. I do feel sorry for him because no one really knew what he was going threw, a really hard life where he grew up not knowing his mom or not knowing how to smile. I think that it would be hard being David pretty much running away from everything and everyone that he knows or loves. The movie did take away a lot of the a lot of the details. Like how he worked in labor at the farmer’s house and meet the dog that sooner or later saved his life.I don’t really think that I pictured David the same as the movie. I didn’t picture him speaking in an accent. I pictured him caring his bundle in his hand not around his whole body! He looked a little the same as I expected though. He had dark hair and dark eyes. I can’t wait to see what book you pick out for us next!

Hi Mr. Toa,
I liked the book better than the movie, Because when you haven’t seen the movie you can picture what the labor camp looks like and how the people look. I kind of got confused when they got to the wine part when the woman gave him 2 lyria’s and just gave him the wine. Because in the book there wasn’t that part. Also the ending part when in the book they say that David that he WALKED to Denmark through Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. But in the movie it says that David goes on a plane and leaves Sophie Hartman…also he saw his mom at the back of a book. Not on a picture frame like in the story. But David in the book and in the movie looked the same!! Brown hair, dull eyes and never smiles. I wonder if the next book is good!! :D

The similarities between the book and the movie are that they have some details that are the same. The differences are that the book explains things and details better, and that the movie doesn’t really is as good as the book. The movie missed lots of part of the story and added things that didn’t happened. Like the movie didn’t even mention the dog or the mean and stupid farmers, the movie also added parts like David didn’t even get on a air plane, and he also didn’t go with the artist and go though the guards.
The movie didn’t that much because the book describe the character David better, like David act different and was afraid to talk to people especially children.
My favorite part of the movie is when David goes in the bakery store and smiled awkwardly. I like it because it is funny to see a people acting like that.
My favorite part of the book is when David sends a letter to Karlo that he is not angry at him anymore, I like it because I am always happy when somebody forgives somebody, and also that part is funny and I like funny parts of any stories.
I like the book better because it describes every thing better, I like it also because when you read a book you could read slowly and when I saw the movie it is kind of a mess.
The book I would want you to read during read aloud is maybe There is a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom because the substitute read it and I kind of like it.

Hi Mr Toa!

I liked the movie than the book. Because I know that everyone says the books are better than the movies just because the movies doesn’t show all the action and the picture of the book. But I think the movie is good enough. I like the movie because ,the book, I need to think and imagine the picture of the words that the author describes. But the movies, you don’t need to think that much. You just look at the picture at the screen and you know how they look like easily not getting your own thoughs about what they look like. I think the movie shows the same as what the book said about David. My favorite parts of the movie and the book is when David saves Maria from that fire burning incident.I like it because before i thought David was a wimp. But at the moment from the incident, I thought David was brave and clever and kind. This book is my 3rd best book ever.

P.S My recommendation for the next reading is Raven’s Gate, Artemis Fowl , The lighting Theif, Crash(most recommend) , and There is a boy in the girl’s bathroom.

Hi

I like the movie because you can see all the actions that david did that in the book you can’t explain truly.

There are also a lot of different things happening in the movie and in the book like David took a plane to his mom instead of going to her house and there was no mean farmer and there was no dog. Also it didn’t tell us that he crossed germany.

My favorite part of the movie was when he met the painter because if he didn’t meet her he would have never found his mom.

My favorite part of the book was when he escaped the mean farmer and made friends with the dog although when the dog died it was very sad:( .

I liked the movie better because you can see what actions that David is doing other than read it and sometimes not really get it.

PS: I think that THERE IS A BOY IN THE GIRLS BATHROOM IS A GREAT BOOK FOR OUR READ ALOUD :) .

I think the book is better than the movie because I like to try to imagine and make a picture in my head. In the book there is no plain Daivid had to walk to Denmark, and there is no dog in the movie. when we were reading the book I pictured Daivid’s friend Josiphn a lot diffrintly I thought he was a kid and I thought he had brown hair not black hair.
bye There is a boy in the girls bathroom is a good book for read aloud
