A Matter of Trust

Posted by: kpoulin | September 2, 2010 | No Comment |

As we begin this exciting school year, students are establishing relationships with their teachers and classmates. A part of this relationship building process, is the necessity of building trust within the confines of their classroom. When students enter the safe haven of any classroom, they leave fear behind and learn how to trust and be trusted and then real learning happens!

trust_1_2

This morning, I had the pleasure of observing a couple of lessons discussing and experiencing the value of trust. In Mrs. Mihova’s class, substitute teacher, Ms. Gugenberger led a discussion about whether the students were, by nature, trusting people or more suspicious. The conversations that ensued were interesting and far reaching as students discovered a little more about each of their classmates. In another classroom, Mrs. Danka Kulikowski’s students were experiencing an activity involving trust falls. Students played different roles in providing support when as a student falls willingly into the waiting arms of their fellow classmates. When students trust their teachers and classmates, they are more willing to take risks and expand their learning.
