Pudong MS trip to BioFarm

img_1721.jpgOn Tuesday March 4th as part of his Middle School gardening elective, Eli Weiss, the Pudong Campus MS Science teacher took thirteen students on a field trip to visit an organic farm close to school. The gardening elective is a new offering this quarter and this trip was an opportunity for students to learn about organic gardening though a hands-on experience at a real farm. Less than a half hour drive from the Pudong campus the OStore BioFarm provides an excellent educational experience for its visitors. Students leaned some basics about organic gardening, had a chance to tour the impressive gardens and greenhouses, and even had the opportunity to harvest their own crops! “I think this was the best fieldtrip I ever went on, we actually got to handpick vegetables and take them home!” said 8th grader Natalie Pong.

For many of the students in group this was the first time for them to pick vegetables straight from the farm and the whole group was excited about this unique opportunity in the city. “Going to visit a real organic farm was great because we actually learned how many vegetables are grown, and now I have some ideas for how we can make out own school garden.” said Marguerite Mei, an eighth grader.

The MS gardening elective this quarter has been focused on doing research and planning for a school garden, which will hopefully get started later this spring. Part of the reason for the trip to the BioFarm was to gather information and ideas that will help students in creating a garden of their own. In addition to a fantastic tour, the staff at the Biofarm also offered to help the gardening elective in their efforts to start their own organic garden at SAS. The addition of a school garden on the Pudong campus will serve as a valuable resource for students both in experiential learning opportunities and also to help educate our school community about the importance of organic agriculture.

Next Thursday, March 13th, please join us on the Pudong Campus for several information sessions:
Following the PTSA meeting, parents are invited to attend a forum presented by the Superintendent and the Chief Financial Officer on the school's budget for 2008-2009. The forum is intended to present a more detailed analysis of the budget and the budgeting process. There will be a Q&A session to answer any questions you may have.
