dragon-kung-fuAll Middle School students will begin taking Kung Fu lessons (beginning the week of November 23rd) for their final unit of the second quarter. Students will be taught a Kung Fu routine that they are expected to practice and learn. Kung Fu instructors have been invited to teach you the proper form and sequence for these routines. The rubric for your performance is below.

This is a unit where we can learn more about our local Chinese culture through martial arts. Students are expected to be as attentive and respectful as they usually are. Being on time for lessons is apart of being respectful of our Kung Fu instructor’s time and efforts.

Kung fu and wushu are popular terms that have become synonymous with Chinese martial arts. However the Chinese terms kung fu (Chinese: 功夫 pinyin: gōngfū) and wushu (traditional Chinese: 武術; simplified Chinese: 武术; pinyin: wǔshù) have very different meanings. Wushu can describe greatly varying martial arts traditions. Kung fu can be used in a context without any martial arts whatsoever. Colloquially, kung fu (or gung fu) alludes to any individual accomplishment or cultivated skill obtained by long and hard work. In contrast, wushu is a more precise term that refers to general martial activities. Please read the following page on the history and basics of Kung Fu. (information found at wikipedia.com)
