Biking

Posted by kzigmand on 13th October 2008

Welcome to our new bicycling unit! The helmets are in, and P.E classes are taking bikes out on the Shanghai Links golf course. Please view the following sites to review some of the hand signals and other safety tips that are involved in biking. The second site is a story about a guy who had biked around the world. Imagine doing that!

Cooperative Games

FUN is the number one factor students will cite when asked why they play games or get involved in physical activity. Student value having fun-fun with their friends and peers, parents, and pets. Having fun is a motivating factor for participation in physical activity. So what happens that turns so many students away from regular physical activity? There are many factors-lack of self-confidence, not wanting to take risks, fear and feelings of failure, lack of skills, disabilities, lack of supportive environments, and lack of opportunities.... and not having fun! One of our goals should be to encourage, promote, and develop active living, healthy lifestyles and personal growth through fun cooperative games. Ultimately, it would be great to ensure that every student is becoming physically fit while having fun. Cooperative games involve students of all skill and ability levels in a fun-filled physical activity where there is "something for everyone". Students who have gained this positive appreciation for physical activity at school are more inclined to participate in physical activity at home and on the weekends with family and friends. The staff at SAS is always trying to find games that provide the following benefits:

-increased participation levels

-increased awareness of the benefits of an active lifestyle

-development of leadership skills including communication, organization, and decision making

-development of social skills resulting in cooperation and teamwork and an understanding of, and commitment to, fair play

-increases school spirit and enthusiasm

-physical skill development
