Mr. Zigmand

Welcome to Mr. Zigmand's P.E and Health page.

Hi SAS Community!

My name is Karl Zigmand (Meet Mr. Z) and I teach P.E and health for grades 6-8 at SAS, Pudong. My blog will hopefully be a way for us to communicate and share ideas throughout the school year. We are off and running with a lot of exciting (November P.E Schedule for grades 6-8) activities already taking place. I also want this to be the place where you can come to see how our students learn and are assessed. For example check out this video on how we use heart rate monitors in P.E class. Student scores are recorded after each class. To understand the coorelation between heart rate monitor results and daily grades click here. For all other fitness testing standards click here. Much more to come so keep checking in with the P.E with Mr. Z blog!

Physical Education

Quarter 2 fitness testing is now completed for all students in grades 6-8. Students in P.E will begin a 2 week unit in table tennis. This will take us to winter break. January 6 we will begin a 3 week unit on basketball.

Health

Grade 6 have begun a unit on personal hygiene. Grade 7 students are concluding their unit on goal setting, and beginning a new unit on tobacco. Grade 8 students will be focusing on nutrition in quarter 2. For a more detailed look at each grade click on the links to the left of this page.

I like the HRM video with Josh. I wonder if we should have a page on Heart Rate Monitors. What do you think?

    Hey Mr. Z!
I think that the video put might put a powerful impact onto world-leaders who are polluting even though it didn’t talk much about that. The words’ every letter just is used so differently in this video and it really makes you wonder, what do i think is important now? Nothing really is just a word but they are questions for everybody. I like this video a lot and the whole thing is like a poem, the music goes with it and i guess it’s an overall outstanding video. Happy Oct. Break!

    Dear Mr.Z,
I was told to watch your movie. I thought it was very inspiring. So, I liked it. And, I think that the pictures are pretty. It was probably telling us to live our life to the fullest, and cherish every moment. So, I think I got the point.

I think the What Will Matter video was very true but kinda sad. It made me think of all the things that will happen after I die so that was a bit depressing. The video is very inspirational, though, and I’m sure that it’ll make many people change the way they live so that all the things they made happen and all the memories of them will live on forever.

  5. Anthony Lui Says:

I agree with almost everything that josepheze said because it made sense and was true

  6. Anthony Lui Says:

I agree with everything joseph said because it made sense and it was true

  7. Jesse Li Says:

I liked the health class video. I agree that after we die Its important that others close to us rember us,and the best way for them to rember us is by doing kind things throught our lives. I also agree that after we are gone, many things such as winning a game will not matter. What will matter is how you acted twards others, and what kind of person they thought you were.

  8. Hannah Cho Says:

I think that the video is telling us that we shouldn’t take life for granted and that we should cherish every minute like it is our last. I agree that after we are gone, what will matter is how we are remembered.

  9. Yiannis Sotiropoulos Says:

    Mr.Z,

This was a very inspiring video, but I don’t think some people would listen to that given advice. I think that if all nations listened to this then they wouldn’t be trying to do what they think was right but what everyone thought was right. I agree with Jesse because after we are gone a game that we won or lost won’t matter anymore.

  10. Emily Says:

I think that this video definitely has a point. It really got me thinking about what really matters of what I do, because we all have to face it, we’re all going to pass away one day or another. Some people may ask, “If people die, then what’s the point of living in the first place?” My answer thanks to inspiration from this video is that what matters is what you contribute to those who still live when you don’t in your life. For example, how you treated someone else, how you treated the earth, and what you did so that future generations will remember you by. Life gives you time to contribute to a big, never-ending project. As the video says, “Choose to live a life that matters.”

I definetely agree with this video. i agree with all the things that dont really matter and all the things that do matter. for ex. i beleive that everything will come to an end and when it does something like how good looking or smart you are wont be important anymore. what will matter is the fact the people close to us will remember us for something we did.

  12. Karl Poulin Says:

I think it’s a great video. Thanks Mr. Z! I had a similar discussion with my son today about how many of the things we do with friends or acquaitances are really not that important. It’s how we do those things and making the time with your friends memorable. Actively trying to have fun and building relationships, learning about and from each other is far more important than material objects. The latest trends, getting the latest games or sitting in front of a screen all day is not all that. Being with friends and forging meaningful relationships is a great start. Making a meaningful contribution to our world; making it a better place is the greatest gift of all. Giving, not always receiving. How will you want to be remembered and for what? How do you want to be remembered?

  13. kzigmand Says:

Thank you again to everyone for taking part in this discussion. Your responses were excellent, and I look forward to continuing this in our health classroom.

    - SORRY I’M A LATE REPLYER!
The movie confuses me, i can’t work out if what it says is implying if its a good or a bad thing :) bassicly it’s saying to treasure the more important things in life, becuase their the things that really matter! I mean, nobodys going to live forever, but what this video is saying is that you should ‘ live a life that matters’ and it doesnt really matter however long you live or not- so long as you live your life to the fullest :)

  15. Esther Qiu Says:

    Mr.Z,
That video was very touching and it taught me a big lesson, that I should cherish life and enjoy it, otherwise what is the use of living on earth, when life is so short, and you don’t have a great time? I will try my best to do that.

  16. Ting-Wai Says:

This is a very touching and great video, I agree with it because in the end, the little things won’t matter, what really matters is what other people remember you by when you die. It doesn’t matter if you win everything, what matters is how you treated out people and what people thought of you.

    Hi!Mr.Zigmand:
I like this ”what will mater” movie.
This movie just like a poem, a wonderful picture, and a good music. This movie tells me that we need to live our life the fullest. And I like this movie very much. This is really a outstanding video.
    At last,happy oct. break!!!!!!!

  18. David Shang Says:

This video is teaching you that not everything is about yourself. I agree with this video because as it said nobody would remember you for what you done for yourself but for others. Something might be important to yourself but not others and thats what really matters.

  19. travis Says:

    Hi Mr.Z
I argee with ‘what will matter’ video, because its very inspiring video and the video is telling us that we shouldn’t take life for granted and that we should cherish every second.it got alot of point about our life.I think that this video can make people change of what they already are.

  20. Edwin Zen Says:

    Hey Mr. Zigamand,

I thought the video was very inspiring, it makes sense that everyone’s life will come to an end. What matters will fade away, what’s remembered may disappear. I agree with this video, it’s not about the consuming, but the giving. Money doesn’t matter at all once someone is dead, all that matters is the mark they left on earth and their spiritual accomplishments to the world around them. Making the best out of life itself would be a good idea, because it isn’t something that can be redeemed once it is taken away. I find that the music put into this video is very inspiring, it had me think about people’s death. How it happened all so suddenly, plans were already made, but weren’t there anymore to fulfill those plans. Like the librarian, it’s really awkward how she was healthy one day, and pasted away the next. She didn’t live to fulfill her dreams, which was pretty upsetting because after going through all those years of school, a disease has over threw her. I Think the main message the video is trying to give is to make the best out of live, be a positive role model, live isn’t something to breeze through and earn money. It’s something billions of people live on, and more are yet to come.

This has nothing related to the assignment, but I thought it is interesting how a video about a tribute to FatWrecked used the same music as this video. FatWrecked is a famous Runescaper that died from organ failure at the age of 17, almost 18.

    Edwin

  21. charles c Says:

i agree with the video because all the little things that you do that only you remember wont matter anymore, its the stuff that you do that impacts others that will count for something like if you where nice to people and do things that people will remember you by.

  22. Anny Says:

    Hi there Mr.Z,
I think the video was inspiring. Somethings aren’t as important as others, after you die what people remember and think when they talk about you is positive is what you should be aiming for. Nice video! I liked it.
