Dear Parents:
Please click on the 2013-14 Swim Meet Calendar below.
2013-4 Swim Meet Schedule
We are all excited about the swim meets for next year.
I wish I could say that these meets are “set in stone”, but they are 90% sure. We still don’t know Hong Kong Mantas’ or Phuket’s dates for next year.
Some new meets added this year are the HS-only, dual meet with SAS-Puxi in November, the Rocket Science sponsored, short course (25m pool) swim meet in September (our first meet of the year) and their long course (50m pool) event in April as well the EAST-WEST meet in April. Due to last year’s Spring Sprints having over 800 swimmers, we decided to separate the Spring Sprints meet into two venues.
One of the commitments of being on the swim team is participating in at least one international meet.
Not relating to the next year’s calendar: remember that BBQ orders are due on Friday, May 24th and please let us coaches know if you will not be returning next year to SAS-Pudong.
Thank you and see you all May 31st!
Dear Parents:
Here is some information of the upcoming events:
Water Polo Clinic
The Water Polo Clinic has been canceled, sadly, due to lack of participants from other teams. Nanjing are not allowed to bring any athletes to an away events due to upcoming exams and the other schools showed no interest. We regret this and hope to have something solid in place for next year.
Phuket Swim Meet
Congratulations to our small team in their performances at the BIS Phuket Flying Fish Invitational. Pudong only sent 5 swimmers, yet they all came back excited, tanned and full of confidence. A big congratulations to Ethan Yong in placing second in the High Point 9-10 age group. Well done swimmers.

End of the Year BBQ Meet, Friday, May 31st, 3:00pm-7:00pm
Food: Eurest will be providing a choice of hamburger, veggie burger OR hot dog, plus a drink and cookie. The price for this will be 40RMB.
This year, I am requesting that you put write on an envelope the people’s names that are attending with their choice of food (hamburger, veggie burger or hot dog). Inside the envelope, enclose 40 RMB per person. Please bring this envelope to the Aquatic Center before Friday, May 24th. Eurest needs this so as to order the food. Last year, we had some problems with people’s choices as they did not label their choice correctly. Let’s try not to have this dilemma this year.
Events: Swimmers will warm up from 3:00-3:30pm and they will swim two sprint events each.
Volunteers: I will be needing volunteers for everything for this meet (timing, stroke and turn judges, marshaling [on pool deck], runners, etc), so please email me with your choice of station to volunteer at.
Awards will be given to all participants during the BBQ, so we will not be needing medal and ribbon labelers this time around.
Let’s get as many volunteers as possible, please.
If you know you will not be here on the team next year, please inform me.
We are hoping to wrap up the event by 7pm. Buses will be provided to JinQiao Starbucks.
This is a great way to finish off the year and to have the swimmers achieve PB’s one last time, so let’s get as many parents and friends attending! This will be our last meet and there will be no practices after this meet.
Also, please be informed that all present 5th Graders and 8th Graders will have to try out for the team next year.
Dear Parents:
We trust you had a good May Day holiday and that you are looking forward to the weekend.
On Saturday, May 18, we will be holding a Water Polo Clinic here at SAS-Pudong. This is open for all swimmers from Grades 7 & up and the clinic will start at 10am and finish at 1pm. Schools from Nanjing and the Shanghai area will also be here, so it will be a fun and exciting event. Please read the attachment and contact me if you are interested.

MS Physical Education teacher, Ben Regan, will be running a triathlon on Monday, May 27th, after school. Please read the attachment and contact directly Ben Regan if you are interested in attending this event. A lot of our MS swimmers have been taking a Triathlon elective and so are looking forward to this competition. As you can see, it is open for all ages, so it should be a fun event. Some are even doing this in a relay!
If you read the attachment, it states that the entry deadline is today, Mary 3rd. However, I talked to Ben and he will make an extension. Please contact Ben if you have any questions.

Our end of the year BBQ meet will be held on Friday, May 31st. Some of the new parents asked me how this works. The swimmers come for warm up right after school on Friday. We will have only 50’s and 25’s events for the swimmers to compete. This competition is only open for our SAS-Pudong team. After the conclusion of the meet, I will be giving out awards and then we will be having a BBQ picnic provided by Eurest. Last year, the cost was 40RMB for a hamburger/veggie burger or hotdog, a drink and a snack. I am in the process of finding out what the price will be this year. We should wrap up the event at around 7pm. This is going to be our last swim meet of a very successful year! Let’s have 100% attendance and strive for PB’s!!
Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions

Congratulations to the SAS-Pudong swimmers for their victory at the Shanghai Sprint Springs! We came in first place with a total point score of 905 points. SAS-Puxi placed second with 728 and SMIC was third with 239 points. Well done, swimmers!
Let me give you some statistics:
804: total number of swimmers who participated

What an amazing job you parents did during the meet! The pool was buzzing! The concession stand was selling food, meet programs and t-shirts all day, the office was full of parents helping out with the ribbons and the marshaling area was running like clockwork! THANK YOU all very much for your support! We run a tight ship and it’s all thanks to you! We really could not have such a successful meet without you!

ON another note…. Practices (Morning and Afternoon) will be cancelled this Friday, April 19th AND Monday, April 22nd due to the Mantas Hong Kong And Manila Swim meets. Please make sure your children are on the 3pm bus on both those days.
Again, thank you very much for your support in making the Spring Sprints a big success!
Dear Parents:
The SAS swim team returned from a successful weekend at the Splash Swim Meet in Bangkok. The combined team with Puxi and Pudong placed first overall! The swimmers had a great experience in ISB’s new outdoor, 50m, 10-lane pool. The competition was tough with fourteen teams participating and our Pudong swimmers had some good swims with lots of PB’s. Our parents were very supportive during the (hot!) meet with temperatures exceeding 34C! The coaches did a great job prepping up the swimmers before their individual races and the relays! Well done swimmers and thank you to the parents for your support.

Lily Zhang will be in the Aquatic office this Thursday, Mar. 21st from 1:30-4:00pm to collect payment for the Phuket Swim Meet (May 4 & 5).
I only have received about 40 responses from parents willing to volunteer at our upcoming swim meet, April 13th, the Shanghai Spring Sprints. With over 140 swimmers on the team, this is not a very good response. Parents! Our meets can only be successful with your help. The coaches work very hard for your children…. we need your support at all the meets we host. Write to me to tell me that you will be volunteering at the meet if you have not already done so. We need to show the Shanghai swim community that we have a united and well organized parent support. The meet will run all day.
Our End of the Year BBQ Swim Meet is now scheduled for Friday May 31st from 3:30pm onwards. Please put that down in your calendar! The meet will start right after school ends with a BBQ to follow at the conclusion of the meet. More information on that later.
Next week, there will be no practice on Friday, March 29th due to EARCOS conference.
Take care!
Dear Parents:
We hope you had a restful weekend and are enjoying the (almost) spring weather!
Bangkok swimmers and parents:
Please be at either Thai Airways counter or Shanghai Airways counter at 6:30 this Friday, March 15th. Both are at Terminal 2. Make sure all swimmers are wearing their SAS polo shirt and khaki pants. Let’s be sharp and look (and swim) like a united team!
Phuket Swim Meet:
Lily Zhang, our travel agent, will be at the Pudong Aquatic Center on Thursday, March 21st from 1:30pm-4pm to collect payment for the Phuket meet. Please click attachment for information.

Hong Kong Mantas Swim Meet:
There are still openings for this meet. Contact me if you are interested!
Shanghai Spring Sprints, April 13th:
We will be needing parent volunteers for marshaling, runners, selling items, ribbon labelers, starter and heat ribbon giver. This will be a one day meet. I will have a spreadsheet made up, so please email me to let me know which station you want. Parents! This meet will be a success with your help. Let’s try and all attend and volunteer at this meet.
Due to the Bangkok swim meet there will be NO PRACTICE Friday, MARCH 15TH (ALL DAY) AND Monday, MARCH 18TH (ALL DAY). Swimmers can change their swim practice dates if they want to.
Congratulations to all swimmers in winning the Shanghai Swim League Plate last Saturday! For all those that were there, I’m sure you will agree with me in saying that there were some terrific races. All swimmers competed hard until the final touch. We have been working hard and the work is showing! Well done, swimmers!

plate results
The SSL Plate saw over 450 swimmers competing. The SSL Cup on Feb. 23rd had over 300 swimmers. Combining the two meets, there were over 700 swimmers in the school league. This is just an amazing program we have here in Shanghai. I can’t think of another city in this area that has such a strong program with support from parents, coaches and administration. The swimmers are gaining so much experience from this and will make them better citizens in the future. Obviously, these meets would not be possible without the support of the parents. Support comes from helping out at the meets, positive interaction with the coaches and lots of encouragement to the athlete.
There were still a few “no-shows” last Saturday. Some were sick, but some notified the coaches the day before the meet and it had nothing to do with sickness! This is so unfair to the swimmers who are there and relying on their teammates for relays, unfair to the coaches who work hard with the swimmer and want to see the results and unfair to the team in general as we rely on points earned from every swimmers. Parents, please understand the team commitment. The SSL swim meet schedule goes up at the beginning of the year.
Speaking of help, SAS-Pudong is hosting the Shanghai Spring Sprints on April 13th. This is only the second meet that we are hosting this year, so we are expecting lots of help in volunteering during the meet. Anyone who was at this meet last year will tell you that it was quite an event We had 668 swimmers competing last year! The pool was buzzing! And of course, it could not have been a success without the parents’ help.
I will put out a list next week for different areas of where we will be needing volunteer support.
Have a great week!
Congratulations to our 58 swimmers who swam so fast at the SSL Cup last Saturday. There were truly some amazing races! Our HS swimmers continued their strong performances coming back from APAC, our 11-12 boys and girls had fine performances with some exciting races and all our 10&Under had lots of PB. Well done swimmers! Click for the full results:
