What we are learning. Writers Workshop-
The writers in Ms. Frazier’s class will be learning how to write conclusion statements in their essays on cities in China. They will also be working on their rough draft of their city brochure using "Pages" as a brochure template.
Readers Workshop-
Monday, January 18, from 9:00 – 9:15 SAS READS!
All students will be reading school wide on Monday morning from 9 to 9.15 am. Drop everything and read for 15 minutes.
The students are now exploring non-fiction text books and their features. What is a glossary and how is it different from an index? How is non-fiction different than fiction? These are some of the questions your child will be asked and will be learning about along with vocabulary development and reading comprehension skills.
Each week your child will be reading a new book with their book club partner. In order to complete a book each week they are required to read each evening for a minimum of twenty minutes. Don’t forget to ask them , “ What book are you reading this week? What is it about? Tell me about the main characters?” Students love to discuss their book and engage in discussions with their book club buddy each week.
Math- The students will be coming home with their unit six math tests on Monday, Feb. 1st. Please sign and have your child review chapters 1-6. We will be taking the mid-year test covering these units on Thursday, February 4.
Science- Magnetism and Electricity
Social Studies- Ancient Chinese History and Dynasties
The students are now exploring the major dynasties, important people who made an impact, inventions, and changes over time.
The students will be working on making a brochure of the city they have been researching and will hopefully entice you to visit another incredible landmark of China.
Word Study- Hurray, to the dedicated students in Ms. Frazier's class. ALL the students completed a grammar booklet over the winter holiday. I am so proud of their effort and dedication to learning and so thankful to the parents that helped see them through this booklet on a daily basis. Did you know that students that understand parts of speech, and have an understanding of conventions, do better in all areas of language arts such as writing and reading skills? Thanks again parents for all your support.

Dear Ms. Frazier,
The book Celine and I are reading is called Flying Solo. The genre is realistic fiction. I read this book before and it is sad but it has a happy ending. In this book a boy died and Rachel couldn’t speak because of the shock she had. I think the main character is Rachel, the girl that couldn’t speak. But in every chapter, another person is the narrator.
Your student,
Jody
