CAS Credit Hours

A MAXIMUM OF 30 CAS HOURS CAN BE EARNED BY SPANISH TRIP STUDENTS

20 hours of Creativity for Homestay/Home Culture Interaction and Interpretation, Communication

Students will spend 6 nights with families which means dinner from 8pm to bedtime at 11pm and breakfast for one hour in the morning.  The actual hours are 35 but we adjust to 20 for true interaction.  Creativity is based upon improvising communication in Spanish and adapting to a new home. culture and language.  We can include all other communication with home stay culture to include talking with waiters, shopkeepers etc during free time and cultural visits.

Required evidence –  4 of the following

  • One or more photos of student with home stay family
  • A  family biography drafted from student interview – names, ages, professions, hobbies, birthdays etc.
  • A filmed or digitally taped conversation with family of at  least 2 minutes
  • Trip journal entries noting difficulties and ongoing strategies to overcome them on a daily basis.
  • A trip journal detailing conversation topics and interactions with family or other people in host culture.
  • A pre-trip personally collated phrasebook to aid in communication      (checked by chaperone prior to trip)
  • A vocabulary  or phrase list collected during family home stay
  • A post trip Photo booth or I movie discussion of trip members discussing the experience and talking about creativity in communication problem solving
  • A photo or comic book or instructional video to help future generations communicate with home stay famiies.
  • Photos of written signs in Spanish cities and an attempt to interpret them without a dictionary and then confirmed by dictionary.
  • Media or journal documentation of different ways of doing things and how the student observed it, figure it out and /or interpreted it.
  • Other – student idea or choice

15 Hours Maximum Hour for Hour Creativity for Reaction to Host Culture Arts  and Artefacts

We will be visiting the Dali museum, the Gaudi museum and the Miro Museum among others as well as UNESCO architectural sites.  Students will receive credit for the actual time spent on the visit plus credit for any creative reaction they are able to produce about this aspect of the trip.  Example, a 3 hour visit of Dali museum plus a personal painting inspired by the visit would earn 3 hours plus the time it took to make the painting.

Required evidence

  • Notes from a trip journal and/or creative arts journal
  • The finished product – painting, song, poem, article for EAGLE, multimedia presentation that extends knowledge.

5 Hour Maximum Hour for Hour Activity Hours

If we are able to have a hike or bike ride or any other sustained physical activity beyond walking from one monument to another students can earn hour for hour credit.

  • a journal entry

15 Hours Maximum Creativity or Service for Post Trip Public Documentation

Students can publicly document the trip by presenting to Spanish club, organizing a student assembly, writing article for student, school and other publications, making a contribution to the trip blog on any aspect of the trip.

This cannot be the same as the  20 hours Host Culture Interaction or the 15 Hours Host Culture Arts. If you do a slide show on the museums you can get extra service hours for presenting the slide show but you cannot get double creativity hours.
