Well another week has started! Last week was a fabulous week with our 100th Day celebration and raising money for Heart to Heart Shanghai. In social studies we have been studying China, and preparing for Chinese New Year. Mrs. Boyer has been helping us conduct research so that we can learn more about China. Using the research we gather students will be creating postcards about China. Students have chosen many different topics from famous landmarks, Chinese inventions to the study of Mandarin. We have also been reading Chinese folktales and other stories to learn about the history of China. On Tuesday, February 9th the Chinese department is hosting a Chinese New Year assembly at 1:30p.m. for parents. Be sure to join us for the fun!

Here are some fun websites and games to play! Enjoy exploring China.

Parent Survey

Posted by Mrs. Robinson on February 7, 2010

Hello Parents,

I would like to invite all parents to complete the anonymous SAS parent survey online. It will provide me with valuable feedback and insights to help guide my teaching practices. Below you will find information and instructions from the Deputy Superintendent. Thank you for participating!

Dear SAS Parent Community Members:
I am happy to announce the beginning of the annual teacher performance evaluation parent survey for the 2009-2010 school year.  The survey will be open to all community members through the entire month of February. The survey can be accessed through the SAS Community Portal.

Translations for the survey can be found at the following links:

For Chinese click here
For Korean click here

Once you log in using your parent ID and password, click the link at the top that is labeled “Teacher Performance Survey”.

As has been done in the past two years, the teachers at SAS are seeking feedback from the parents of their children about their performance in areas in which they would have direct involvement. The results and comments from the survey go directly to the teachers who then include the survey information as part of their professional portfolio, and the survey content is discussed with their supervisor.
I would urge you to provide specific and professional feedback to the teachers at SAS. Consider carefully not only addressing suggestions, but also providing teachers feedback on what you feel is going well in the classroom programs at SAS.

The feedback you provide is important and it will be part of the professional reflection process as all of our teachers have a vested interest in ways to improve the programs at Shanghai American School.

Below you will find a list of a few frequently asked questions.

Sincerely,
Andrew Torris

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Is the survey multi-lingual?
A: You can leave answers to the open ended questions in other languages and they will be interpreted later.  The advancement office has also provided access to translations of the surveys at these web addresses.  Either click the link or copy and paste the link into your web browser.
For Chinese click here  http://gallery.mailchimp.com/1e2c001e7323bba58b5fbf241/files/SurveyinfoChinese.pdf

For Korean click here http://gallery.mailchimp.com/1e2c001e7323bba58b5fbf241/files/SurveyinfoKorean.pdf

Q: Is the survey anonymous?
A: Yes. Completely.  In fact it is so anonymous that technical staff supporting the independent website only has access to the data as it comes from survey input.

Q: Do I have to do all the surveys at the same time, or can I come back to the website again and again?
A: You can return the website several times, and you can revise your survey through the month of February.

Newsletter February 1st to 5th

Feb 1What's Going on This Week?
Monday (Day 4) – Music
Tuesday (Day 5) – Library, PE & Art
Wednesday (Day 6) – PE
Thursday (Day 1) – Treat Day, Music & PTSA General Meeting
Friday (Day 2) –  Wear RED, Art & Counseling

It is amazing to think that tomorrow we will have spent 100 days together! Time is flying by, and our class is half way to third grade. It is so important to take the time to acknowledge these accomplishments. Over the last 100 days our students have been accomplishing and learning new things everyday. Everyone deserves a pat on the back for their hard work and dedication over the last one hundred days. We will be having all sorts of fun on tomorrow, February 1st, to celebrate our 100th day of school. Happy 100th Day!

Celebrating the 100th day of school is not the only number worth celebrating. Over the last google100 days we have received more than 2,000 (and counting!) different visitors to our classroom website Welcome to Life in Second Grade. In fact, we have had visitors from all of the continents (well... except Antarctica!) and over 60 different countries. That definitely deserves a WOW! People are "googling" all sorts of different things and we are popping up everywhere. When people search for information about Robert Munsch, polygons, weather or world celebrations, we come up, and everything we have been learning is shared with people, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE! I wonder how many visitors we will have by the end of the year? Any predictions?

The word WOW describes the GLOBAL MINDED efforts of our elementary school last Friday. Friday was Pajama Day for Haiti. Students could pay 10 RMB (or more) to wear their pajamas and helping the people of Haiti recover after the devastating earthquake. Students in our classroom brought in their donations and pajamas! Some students chose not to wear their pajamas but brought in donations anyways! All in all the Pudong Elementary school raised 17, 242 RMB for Haiti. That is a number worth celebrating too! Thank you to all the families who sent in donations!

Fractions are fantastic, fabulous and FUN! Check out these interactive games and websites  that will help learn and practice. Click on the different pizzas to connect to the games and websites. It looks like Mr. Robinson grabbed a piece or two of pizza!

APAC Basketball at SAS Pudong

Monday (Day 4) – Music
Tuesday (Day 5) – Library, PE and Art
Wednesday (Day 6) – PE
Thursday (Day 1) – Treat Day, Music & PTSA General Meeting
Friday (Day 2) – Art and Counseling

On Thursday twelve APAC basketball teams came to SAS Pudong campus to start a three-day tournament. Each elementary grade level was given two teams to support. 2nd grade was assigned to Hong Kong International School (HKIS) and International School of Beijing (ISB). The elementary students made banners that introduced each team as they were introduced to the parents, teachers, and students. The excitement was high as the entire Pudong campus awaited the arrival of the teams in the high school gym. We cheered and welcome our teams. The games began shortly after. We went to see part of a game played on Thursday. What an exciting event! Then at 1:00 the ISB basketball players came to meet us in person. After introductions, our students asked thoughtful questions to the players. Then the best part of all, the students were given lessons and got to play basketball with the stars! It was a wonderful day to be an EAGLE! On Friday we met players from HKIS, and cheered on our home team SAS Pudong! Go EAGLES!

Tuesday (Day 6) – PE
Wednesday (Day 1) – Music
Thursday (Day 2) – Photo Day, Counseling & Art
Friday (Day 3) – PE & Pay 10 RMB and Wear Your PJs for Haiti

CooperationWow, we are back into the swing of things. Last week was action packed and full of fun. We enjoyed dropping everything to participate in SAS Reads. The whole school, Pudong and Puxi, stopped to read from 9:00 to 9:15 last Monday.  It was so amazing to know that over 3000 people – students, teachers and support staff – were all reading at the same time! Later in the week Mrs. Merrill dropped by for our counseling lesson. During our time with her we learned all about cooperation by working together to build paper cup towers using rubber bands and string. It was a lot of fun! On Friday we had the opportunity to meet with our fourth grade reading buddies. We shared out first pieces of nonfiction writing with them. This week students worked on writing instruction manuals or as we call them How To Books. Students wrote books about How to Jump Rope, How To Be Sneaky, How to Ride a Ripstick and How To Clean Up After Your Dog. They were wonderful to read!

A Letter From the Chinese Department

Dear Parents,

The Chinese New Year is approaching. To celebrate the festival, our Chinese department is organizing an elementary Chinese New Year assembly. The formal performance for parents only will be on Tuesday, February 9th, 2010. We would like to invite you to join us in the celebration of this significant festival. Please bring your camera/video camera for the occasion. We are sure that you want to capture this exciting moment.

Please prepare a traditional Chinese costume for your child to wear for the formal performance. You may buy the costume from Carrefour or any department store in Shanghai. Please check the sample pictures below. (Any special request for dress will be announced and requested by your child’s LLB teacher.)

If you are interested in being a voluntary helper, please let your child’s Chinese teacher know, or contact Ms. Xu at ellen.xu@saschina.org. Your support is appreciated in advance.

If your family will leave earlier for holiday and your child may not join the performance, please also let your child’s LLB teacher know so that we can make some arrangements in advance.

We look forward to a great assembly!

Best Regards,
Chinese Department

- Monday (Day 6) - PE & All School Read
- Tuesday (Day 1) -
Music
- Wednesday (Day 2) - Counseling and Art
- Thursday (Day 3) - PE, Treat Day, Counselors' Cafe & ES PTSA Meeting
- Friday (Day 4) – Music & Wear Your House Shirt

All School Read - Today, Monday, January 18th was the ALL SCHOOL READ. Students Pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade will be dropped everything to read for 15 minutes. What a wonderful way to start the week!

Unit Seven Math Assessment - Today in your child's homework folder you will find their work from our seventh math unit.  We will be assessing the students on this unit this week.  Students have completed most of the pages, but not all of them. Please know that our math program revolves around students participating in the games that reinforce the skills taught, rather than always completing paper to pencil tasks. Also, know that students work at different rates and complete different amounts of work each class.  It is voluntary for the children to complete the unfinished pages at home, but they do help to reinforce skills. If your child has items circled on their pages it means that it needs to be corrected, although many children have corrected their mistakes already! Please know that these pages do not need to be returned to school.  Feel free to use any or all of them as a guide for helping your child prepare for the upcoming assessment.
