Edmodo

Dear parents,

Due to slow connection to Edmodo account for the past couple weeks, I decide to use Moodle after October break. The good thing about Moodle is that students are familiar with this website because most of teachers are using Moodle right now. It is also easy to upload and download things from Moodle, much fast than Edmodo. However, the down side for using Moodle is our parents will have no parent account. Parents will need to ask their child for user name and password in order to see the course.

I will post all necessary information on this blog, as well as sending parents emails reporting students’ progress from time to time.

Please contact me anytime when you have any concerns about your child.

Following is a list of suggestions generated by parents to help manage computer use at home and create/maintain positive connections with your child:
• Spouses should discuss the terms of computer use in advance.  Where will the computer be located?  How much time will be allowed on it? What times can children access the computer?  Make some basic agreements before having a conversation with your child.
• Discuss with your child an acceptable amount of time to be using the computer for socializing and an appropriate amount of time for schoolwork.  Everyone agrees on this allotted amount and then set an automatic log off time.  You can choose-30-45-60 minutes.  The log in box will automatically pop up and the parent needs to log back in again with their secret password.
• When you talk with your child about creating new rules at home around computer use, let them know why you are making these changes and also be sure to ask for their input so they feel like they have a stake in creating the new guidelines.  Be flexible with your child, let them see that you are willing to give a little and chances are greater they will be willing to give a little as well.
• Location of the computer is important. Make sure that you can frequently see the screen and do random checks to see the web page history if you think they have not been focusing on schoolwork.  Let your child know that if the computer is in their bedroom, you will be coming in to see what they’re up to.
• Consider not having the computer/laptop in the bedroom or if it is in the bedroom shut off the Internet wireless connection at bedtime or whatever time you have agreed upon.
• Let your child know that you are willing to set up a trial period with certain rules for computer use. Set a time period of 1 or 2 weeks and then re-visit the situation and talk about it again.  Readjust rules if necessary.  Keep the communication open with your child.
• Instead of talking things through in the home environment, go out for a walk or bike ride, one on one, and talk as you go.  Sometimes this helps the conversation flow more easily and is less likely for parent and child to get stuck in opposite points of view.

Learning Experiences Beyond the Classroom

Chinese Department – Learning Experiences Beyond the Classroom

2011-2012

SAS considers homework necessary for the development of successful independent learning behaviors. Homework is intended to support and extend in-school instruction and will not be used as an end in itself or for punishment.

We believe that time management is essential for long-term projects. Students should be discouraged from leaving work until the last minute. Students are encouraged to communicate with their teachers regarding their homework progress. They can also find a homework buddy to help them brainstorm ideas for homework.

The SAMS agenda states “When you do miss school, it is your responsibility to meet with the teachers of your missed classes to determine what work needs to be made up. You will be allowed the number of days you were absent, plus one more day, to make up the missed work. Be sure your parents call, or write a note, so that your absence is excused.”

We are here to support each student and we understand that extenuating circumstances may exist resulting in students being unable to complete their homework. In such circumstances, it is important for students to have their parents call or write a note of explanation and make-up assignments later.

Students are expected to have practice assignments to reinforce learning for each Chinese class. The practice assignments are not limited to written work; they can also be reading, online work, research or oral practice. Most of the practice assignments will not be graded for inclusion in the final grade, but the practice they provide is essential for student learning.

Students will have both announced and unannounced quizzes through the year. It is the student’s responsibility to be prepared for unannounced quizzes.  Quizzes will reflect what you have learned in class and how well you have practiced at home. Grades will also include assignments that are finished independently in class as well as unit tests and a final exam at the end of each semester.

Students are responsible for checking their teacher’s blog on a regular basis.  Assignments should be completed the night they are assigned so that technical problems that may occur can be remedied and the assignment can be completed. Students are responsible for seeking assistance for technical problems through the Mac Care Center.  Technical problems cannot be used as an excuse for incomplete or missing assignments.

Important: extra credit will not be offered.
