Course Guidelines 2009-10

Dear Students & Parents/Guardians,

As we begin the new 2009-10 school year at SAS Pudong, it is important to review the expectations of our Physical & Health Education courses. Physical Education and Health Education are year-long courses taught separately, within the same schedule. Your child will have the same teacher for both subjects. Please read the guidelines below for understanding.

Program Description

The Middle School Physical & Health Education programs will inspire students to the benefits of an active and balanced lifestyle. Exploration of activity and sport from around the world, instruction on effective athletic techniques, and empowerment in making healthy choices will provide a foundation from which students will excel in their lives.

We are committed to guiding students to the power of educated choices and the fun of activity, whether competitive or cooperative, team or individual. Important keys to success in this program are student participation and student responsibility.

Physical Education lessons and units are planned to help students increase their levels of physical fitness and athletic abilities. Participation for all students, regardless of ability level or personal experience, is the major focus and expectation of the program. As students establish new fitness goals each quarter, students are expected to practice for improvement throughout the year.

Our Health Education course is designed to enhance classroom learning in a positive, supportive setting. Lessons and units are planned to help students increase their classroom learning in a positive, supportive setting. It is our goal to provide a fun, educationally challenging and emotionally positive experience for all students.

Middle School students in Health Education will learn about the following topics related to personal and lifetime wellness: Personal Responsibility and Decision Making, Nutrition, Personal Safety and First Aid, Growth and Development, Conflict Resolution & Violence Prevention, Social Health, Mental and Emotional Health, Substance Abuse Prevention, Tobacco, Alcohol, and Stress Management.

Expectations

Locker room

Food and drink are not permitted in the locker room area.  It is expected that the locker room will be left clean and neat.  Students are strongly encouraged to leave all valuables in their main lockers (cell phones, portable music and entertainment devices). Any other valuables should be LOCKED in the student’s assigned locker at all times. No laptop computers should be brought to the PE locker rooms. Students who lose their locks will need to pay RMB 50 to replace the lock. DO NOT SHARE YOUR LOCKER COMBINATION WITH ANY OTHER STUDENTS. Students should not be using other students lockers.

Attire

All students must wear appropriate clothing for Physical Education and aquatics classes.  An official SAS top, SAS shorts or pants, and athletic shoes are mandatory for each class period (this applies to both warm and cold weather attire).  In addition, all students should bring and use a water bottle that can be used for bicycling and Physical Education units.

In the interest of personal hygiene, all students ARE REQUIRED to change clothing prior to and after their PE class.  Showers are available and students are highly encouraged to use them.  Towels must be brought from home.  With the students’ safety in mind all jewelry must be removed before the start of class.

Illness and Injuries

1. Students who are well enough to attend school are expected to dress for PE lessons.
2. Only excuse notes from the doctor or nurse will be accepted. No parental excuse notes will be accepted. Students need to check in with the nurse PRIOR to the start of class to obtain an excuse note.
3. Teachers will make appropriate accommodations for the students. Assignments or activity time will be assigned to students who have prolonged injuries or illnesses.
4. Long term injury or illness will require medical documentation.

Supplies

In hot weather, sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat are strongly recommended.  Asthma sufferers MUST bring their inhalers to class and follow its prescribed use.

Assessment in Physical Education

Participation in Physical Education is objectively measured as students use heart rate monitors. This educational tool helps students monitor and record their own heart rate. Using the Karvonen method, students’ heart rates are calculated so that minimum and maximum heart rate limits are set. Students need to participate vigorously enough to raise and maintain their heart rates within this target heart rate zone for as much time as possible during each class. The amount of time is directly related to the participation score for each class. This score accounts for 70% of the students’ quarterly grade. All lessons are designed to encourage high levels of physical activity and usually students have more than enough time to achieve high scores. Students are active, having fun and becoming more fit.

Fitness testing is divided into two components. Students will continue to be assessed in our battery of fitness tests each quarter. Fitness testing components include cardiovascular fitness, explosive power, strength, agility and flexibility. Testing results will account for 20% of the student grade.

To help encourage and learn an appreciation for lifelong fitness, students will complete fitness goals and action plans on their student blog. These goals and action plans will be shared periodically with parents. Regular and frequent feedback will be provided from teachers and working toward achievement of the stated goals is an expectation of students. Fitness goals will account for 10% of the student grade.

Students will make every effort to improve upon their personal best fitness scores. This scoring scheme allows for students who practice for, and try their best during fitness testing, to achieve grades that are reflective of their efforts, and improving fitness levels. Students who set and work towards achieving goals will learn of the importance of this life skill and apply it to other areas of their lives.

Assessment in Health Education

Formative assessments will account for a total of 30% of the overall Health Education grade each quarter. Studying for quizzes and completing assignments on time are an expectation in our classes. Completing homework is an expectation and any homework assigned will be relevant and formative in nature. Homework will be assigned a score of five points, with one point taken off daily until a set deadline. Students can always earn one point out of five if the homework is submitted before the end of the quarter.

Summative assessments will account for 70% of the overall grade. Two to four summative assessments will be given each quarter, depending on the length of each unit of study. Students will have the opportunity to re-take each summative assessment once, if requested. The goal here is to encourage learning of each of the necessary developmental life skills and to provide students the opportunity to achieve the standards and benchmarks outlined in our curriculum.
